Karoway offers a wide variety of finishing services, including...

Antiquing (or blackening): A process through which we dip your casted pewter items in a solution which gives them a “black or aged look”, perhaps you want to have the lettering on your piece stand out better, or maybe your pewter figurine is too shiny, it doesn’t look like pewter it looks like silver. Whatever the reason, antiquing is a great way to easily get the look you want without spending a ton of money.

Electroplating: Usually done when you don’t want the piece to look like pewter, but you don’t want to pay the expense of having that item made out of sterling silver, gold, or brass. There are a variety of finishes available from our plater including imitation rhodium (which gives the look of sterling silver without the tarnishing worries!) imitation antique rhodium, bright gold, matte gold, or brass-ox. Anytime you have plating done on an item, it does involve extra expense, but it can be cheaper than having those items casted out of those particular metals and it will give you the same look.

Epoxy: Often referred to as "painting". You can add a whole new look to your items, be it bring a pewter butterfly to life with color or simply paint in the background on a belt buckle to add some pizzazz. We have found that belt buckles (for example) that you would like epoxied tend to look best when plated first to give the borders that extra shine, and then epoxied. We can also put a clear epoxy on non-plated items so that they retain the luster given during the vibing process without the extra expense of plating.

Vibratory Finishing: Vibratory finishing, also known as "vibing", is usually the next step after the casting process towards getting your items finished. Vibing is accomplished by placing newly cast pieces into a vibratory tumbler with one of the following media...

  • Porcelain Beads: Generally used to give a shiny or bright-vibed finish. It produces high shine and luster which can be retained and kept pretty much smudge free if a clear lacquer is applied to the pieces following vibing and then allowed to air dry.
  • Light Brown Cones: Extremely aggressive cut mixing media which is used if you have a piece which needs to be cleaned up, without worrying how much detail is lost.
  • Green Cones: Medium aggressive cut mixing media, for use on pieces where you have detail that you want to stand out.
  • Blue Cones: Mildly aggressive cut mixing media which is used to put a dull finish on a piece.
  • Pink Cones: Mildest cut mixing media used to vibe pieces.
